about

It was late 2019 and I was well on my way to preparing the first set of songs when Le Vent du Nord released their album «Territoires» which I ordered immediately, unaware that it would include this beautiful song whose melody I had not previously heard. The title and some of the lyrics are a bit different, as usual for these folksongs, but I instantly recognized the lyrics in the repeating chorus and identified it as one of the songs in Mémère’s Notebook. I rushed to the nearest Le Vent du Nord concert to quiz them about the song’s origins. Simon Beaudry had found it in the archives at Université Laval, but the original recording of George Comeau lives at Université Sainte-Anne in Nova Scotia. I worked hard at a translation that not only conveys the sense and sensibility of the French lyric, but also the unique rhyming structure and iambic rhythm. Although written as a chanson à répondre, I often lack enough French-speaking respondents in the audience for the repeated parts so I’ll sing the verses in French and respond with the English translation. It’s beautiful either way.

lyrics

When the bird begins A song to sing
Oh let it ring
To begin the day (bis)
Goodness supreme has come to me I’ll say I love you would you love me Would you, would you
If I say I love you would you love me
When the shadow is seen Upon the green
And the rocks do breathe Along the bay (bis)
(refrain)
Along the shore And upon the moor The ancient lore
It seems to say (bis)
(refrain)
When you sleep
In roses deep
A thousand dreams Will come your way
