about
Father Anselme’s recorded version of this song of unrequited love was sung at double the speed with a jaunty lilt that I felt didn’t quite match the sorrowful lyrics. When I slowed it down it took on an almost painfully sad dimension that brings tears to my eyes each time I sing it. There are many songs out there with this title but I haven’t found any other versions of this one yet.
lyrics
Tell me then what are you thinking You, who don’t think much of me It is I who is always clinging
To every word that you say to me
I can see well I’ve been abandoned You don’t love me like you used to do So you want then to see my heart break Night and day for the love of you
So you want then to see my heart break Night and day for the love of you
I, who love you more than myself,
I would fain give to you my life
Yet cannot bear to feel the heartbreak To see you go with another wife
(refrain)
Fare thee well then, dear heart, adieu For I now must abandon you
You have chosen to take another Don’t forget what I gave to you
(refrain)
